The Drive

Not all extensions stand the test of time – and this project was a perfect example. A previous addition to this three-storey Victorian semi-detached home had begun to feel dark, disconnected and no longer suited the needs of a growing, changing family. It was time for a bold rethink.

Our vision was to create a home that could truly evolve with the family over time. Flexibility and future-proofing were central to the design, even including the introduction of an internal lift so the house can adapt effortlessly as needs change in the years ahead.

The outdated side extension was completely removed and replaced with a striking new L-shaped addition, beautifully combining warm brick with charred timber to create a bold yet sympathetic contrast to the original Victorian home. Inside, the transformation is dramatic. What was once a cramped and gloomy series of rooms has been opened up into a vibrant, light-filled entertaining space where natural light pours in and carefully considered cross-ventilation and a new ASHP technology keeps the home feeling fresh and comfortable.

One of the standout moments in the design is the stunning picture window overlooking the tiered garden. Complete with a built-in window seat, it has quickly become a favourite spot in the house – perfect for a quiet morning coffee, reading a book, or simply enjoying the view of the garden beyond. The central dining area has been cleverly reconfigured to accommodate the new lift, along with a WC and a practical boot and utility room. These “back-of-house” functions now sit perfectly in a part of the plan that previously struggled for natural light, making the overall layout far more efficient. Upstairs, even the smallest spaces have been reimagined. A previously overlooked cupboard on the top floor has been transformed into a compact but incredibly useful shower room – an absolute game-changer for those late-night moments.

This project is a fantastic reminder that homes can grow and change just as families do. With thoughtful design, bold ideas and a clear vision, even a tired extension can be completely reimagined to create a home that works beautifully both today and for many years to come.
